Adult ADD / ADHD

Although ADHD is usually diagnosed in childhood, it is not a disorder limited to children -- ADHD often persists into adolescence and adulthood and is frequently not diagnosed until later years.

While there is no specific data on the rates of ADHD in adults, the disorder is sometimes not diagnosed until adolescence or adulthood, and half of the children with ADHD retain symptoms of the disorder throughout their adult lives. (It is generally believed that older individuals diagnosed with ADHD have had elements of the disorder since childhood.)

The impact of years and years of undiagnosed ADHD in adults brings a lifetime of negative beliefs, failures disappointments. So many adults have grown up with the belief that they were lazy, unmotivated, stupid. They have not realized their true strengths but have spent a lifetime trying to make their weaknesses stronger.

We live in a performance-oriented world. It’s also a world in which, too often, emphasis is placed on identifying a person’s areas of challenge and then focusing on those areas in order to improve performance. This negative focus can take its toll on the person’s innate strengths, which may be downplayed or overlooked in the quest for “improvement.”

For adults with ADHD, however, the effort involved in focusing our attention on our weaker areas of performance only exacerbates the challenges of ADHD. If we’re constantly expected to focus on our performance challenges, then we’re simply setting ourselves up for frustration, anxiety, and even immobilization – all of which inevitably lead to poor self-esteem. Although this preposterous "weakness" philosophy dominates our world, it does not serve adults with ADHD well.

Adults with ADHD do not get ahead by focusing their time and energy on making their weaknesses stronger. They create momentum and progress by identifying their natural talents and converting them into strengths that they can integrate into their daily structure and systems. At the ADD Coach Academy, we believe that ADHD in adults is a unique brain wiring with hidden treasures . They can be excavated and discovered through the coaching process. Coaches trained at the ADD Coach Academy have worked with countless numbers of individuals with ADHD to help them identify, embrace and integrate their divine talents, in to their lives, for greater fulfillment, success and joy.
